Commonwealth Day – Birmingham celebrations, 9 March 2015

Did you know that Commonwealth Day is celebrated in the UK every year and this year it falls on 9th March?  Birmingham is marking the occasion this year by welcoming the new members of our community from the Commonwealth in a citizenship ceremony at the Register Office.  Citizens from the Commonwealth will receive their official recognition of becoming a UK citizen as well as receiving a certificate from the Birmingham Commonwealth Association.  Honorary Consuls from the countries our new citizens are originally from will also be present at the registry office.

The Commonwealth Flag will fly over Victoria Square outside the Council House with Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Lord Mayor, Shafique Shah and Head of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association and Honorary Consul for Lithuania, Keith Stokes-Smith marking the occasion.

A celebratory dinner has also been arranged at University College Birmingham by catering students with a Commonwealth keynote speech.
