Food and sustainability

  • Birmingham signed the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) in 2015.
    • The MUFPP is an international agreement among cities from all over the world, committed “to develop sustainable food systems that are inclusive, resilient, safe and diverse, that provide healthy and affordable food to all people in a human rights-based framework, that minimize waste and conserve biodiversity while adapting to and mitigating impacts of climate change”.
    • Birmingham Joined the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact in 2015 and received awards for six different practices, from our COVID-19 Emergency Food Response to our Birmingham Food Conversation project.
    • Birmingham City Council is also a member of the 2022 steering committee for the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, demonstrating our ability to influence and take a leadership role global for our work in Food Systems.
  • FOOD TRAILS project – led by the city of Milan.
    • Birmingham is one of the 11 partner cities in this project.
    • Food Trails is a four-year fully funded EU Horizon 2020 project aiming to translate in Europe the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact’s collective commitment to integrated urban food policies into measurable and long-term progress towards sustainable food systems.
    • The aim of the Food Trails project is to support cities across Europe to develop healthier, sustainable food policies/strategies and food policy actions.
