CreaTech Frontiers: a bold new chapter for Birmingham’s creative industries

Circle-rotated-2

Where creativity meets technology to shape the future of innovation in the West Midlands

Birmingham has long been a city of makers, storytellers, and innovators. Now, with the launch of the CreaTech Frontiers Creative Industries Cluster, the city is stepping confidently into a new era—where creativity meets cutting-edge technology to shape the future of the UK’s creative economy.

Officially launched at STEAMhouse in April 2025, CreaTech Frontiers is one of the UK’s new Creative Industries Clusters funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It brings together a dynamic network of universities, creative businesses, technologists, and policymakers across the West Midlands and beyond. The goal? To unlock the full potential of the region’s creative talent by fusing it with emerging technologies—from AI and immersive media to data-driven storytelling and beyond

A cluster built on collaboration

Led by Birmingham City University and rooted in the collaborative ethos of STEAMhouse, the cluster is designed to be more than just a research initiative. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem where ideas are tested, partnerships are forged, and new business models are born.

The cluster’s first major initiative, the Foundations Funding Call, was launched in the summer —offering support to early-stage projects that explore the intersection of creativity and technology. It’s a chance for local creatives to experiment, prototype, and push boundaries, with the backing of a national innovation framework.

Why it matters

The creative industries are one of the UK’s fastest-growing sectors, contributing over £100 billion to the economy annually. But as the landscape evolves, so too must the ways creative talent is supported and grown. CreaTech Frontiers is a timely response to this challenge—ensuring that Birmingham and the wider region remain at the forefront of creative innovation.

For the region, this is more than just an economic opportunity. It’s a cultural moment. A chance to showcase the city’s unique blend of heritage, diversity, and digital ambition on a national stage.

What’s Next?

Over the coming months, CreaTech Frontiers will roll out a series of events, funding opportunities, and collaborative programmes designed to support creatives at every stage of their journey. Whether you’re a filmmaker exploring virtual production, a designer working with generative AI, or a startup looking to scale, there’s a place for you in this growing community.
