A festive tradition returns to the heart of the city
Birmingham’s iconic Frankfurt Christmas Market officially opened on Saturday 1st November, making its 25th year as one of the city’s most beloved winter traditions. The market, which began with just 11 stalls, has grown into the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria.
This year, 60 stalls line Victoria Square and Upper New Street, offering traditional German food, drinks, gifts, and crafts. Despite a reduction in stall numbers due to ongoing city centre developments, the market continues to draw millions of visitors and remans a cornerstone of Birmingham’s festive season.
The official opening was marked by a civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, attended by the Deputy Mayor of Frankfurt and the Director of Event Organisation & Marketing at Frankfurt Tourismus und Congress. The event highlighted the enduring partnership between Birmingham and Frankfurt, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026.
In her speech, the Deputy Mayor of Frankfurt reflected on the significance of the market:
“Since the start of this tradition 25 years ago, Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market has grown into one of the largest German Christmas Markets outside Germany. It is certainly the most visible partner city project between our cities.”
She also praised the collaborative efforts of the German organisers, Birmingham City Council and the market staff, expressing hope that the tradition would continue for many years to come.
Following speeches and an exchange of gifts, the Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor pressed the ceremonial red button to officially launch the market. Guests then toured the stalls, enjoying the festive atmosphere and sampling seasonal treats.
As Birmingham and Frankfurt prepare to mark 60 years of partnership, plans are already underway for joint celebrations. These include a proposed “partnership village” at Frankfurt’s own Christmas market and continued collaboration through initiatives like the “Young Women in Leadership” virtual exchange programme.
The Frankfurt Christmas Market will remain open throughout November and December, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to experience the magic of a traditional German Christmas in the heart of Birmingham.
