Empowering communities and driving change
Birmingham City Council (BCC) is on an exciting journey to completely transform our local food system. We’re committed to making sure everyone in Birmingham has access to nutritious, affordable, and delicious food.
Our efforts are focused on a variety of innovative projects that tackle different aspects of the food system. From increasing access to healthy food and supporting local food businesses to promoting sustainable eating practices and reducing food waste, we’re working hard to make a real difference. These initiatives are all about empowering our local communities, fostering collaboration, and driving positive change across the city.
One of our standout projects is the Full of Beans campaign. This initiative promotes the consumption of beans and pulses, highlights the powers the nutrients give to our bodies and how they support our planet, and showcases their versatility in cooking. By encouraging consumption of this healthy and environmentally-friendly food, we’re helping residents make nutritious food choices that will regenerate our planet.
We’re also co-producing healthy, sustainable and culturally diverse eating guidance to ensure that everyone in our community can enjoy a nutritious and balanced diet that is planet friendly. This includes developing resources for education, healthcare and community projects that cater to different cultural preferences and dietary and health needs.
We’re also involved in national and international collaborations, like the UK Urban Food Forum and the Mandala Consortium. These partnerships allow us to share best practices and innovative solutions to transform urban food systems for the benefit of both people and the planet.
Our comprehensive approach is reflected on the flyer below, and includes initiatives like the Cost of Living response, which is addressing food insecurity in the city, and the Surplus Food Hub, which redirects edible food that would have been wasted to those in need, just to mention a few.
