Birmingham-West Midlands City Region: a beacon of innovation

Birmingham-West Midlands city region is proud to be a semi-finalist in the 2024 European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) Awards. This recognition highlights our commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and governance for the benefit of our citizens.

The journey ahead

In September, we will present our application in a private, online hearing with the jury. Competing in the European Capital of Innovation category, we stand alongside:

  • Bristol (United Kingdom)
  • Espoo (Finland)
  • Tallin (Estonia)
  • Tampere (Finland)
  • Torino (Italy)

The grand finale

On 13 November 2024, the winners and runners-up will be announced at the awards ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, the 2023 iCapital winning city. The European Capital of Innovation category winner will receive a prize of €1 million, while the two runners-up will get €100,000 each.

A step towards innovation excellence

Supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe, the iCapital prize celebrates cities that open their governance practices to experimentation and aim to be role models for others. The WMCA’s inclusion in this elite group underscores its commitment to innovation and its role as a leader in urban development.
