A celebration of youth, music and international friendship at the Council House
On 17th July 2025, Birmingham City Council House welcomed distinguished guests and young musicians from China for the first edition of the UK–China Sister Cities Cultural Exchange Programme. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham formally opened the event, extending a warm welcome to representatives from Guangzhou and Nanjing, and celebrating Birmingham’s role as host of this new annual initiative.
In his address, the Lord Mayor shared the city’s bold vision: to establish Birmingham as the home of a summer youth cultural festival that brings together outstanding young artists from around the world. He praised the creativity, diversity and global connections that define the region, and recognised the leadership of international pianist Di Xiao, Artistic Director and founder of the programme.
Music as a bridge between cultures
The programme featured performances by student musicians from Nanjing No.1 Middle School Orchestra and Guangdong Experimental High School Chinese Traditional Orchestra. Each piece was introduced in English by the students, showcasing not only their musical talent but also their enthusiasm for cultural exchange.
The young musicians collaborated with Birmingham’s own youth orchestra, the sister ensemble of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), reflecting the city’s vibrant musical landscape and commitment to nurturing talent.
Formal recognition and gift exchange
A highlight of the morning was the presentation of a Certificate of Friendship, jointly signed by representatives from Birmingham, Guangzhou and Nanjing. This symbolic gesture marked the formal recognition of their cultural collaboration and was followed by a gift exchange between the three cities, representing mutual respect and a shared commitment to future partnerships.
Guests included Mr Liu Zhan, Deputy Director of the Nanjing Education Bureau, and Mr Cai Zhi, Principal of Guangdong Experimental High School. Ms Wang Yun, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in the UK, also attended and delivered a short address, joined by First Secretary Ms Tian.
A day of cultural discovery
Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a guided tour of the historic Council House and a formal lunch in the Banqueting Suite. In partnership with the Artistic Director and world-renowned pianist, Prof. Di Xiao, the European and International Affairs team at Birmingham City Council coordinated the day’s proceedings, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience for all involved.
Looking ahead
This inaugural edition of the UK–China Sister Cities Cultural Exchange Programme sets the stage for a lasting tradition—one that will continue to bring young artists together, inspire future generations, and reinforce Birmingham’s role as a hub for international cultural dialogue.
As the programme grows, it will further deepen ties between Birmingham and its sister cities, and celebrate the power of music and culture to connect communities across borders.
