Background:

Birmingham and Zaporizhzhia became partner cities in 1973.
In 2022, after the Russian full-scale invasion over Ukraine, Birmingham proved to be a City of Sanctuary for refugees.
- During this time, Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme has been established, enabling individuals, charities, community groups, and businesses to volunteer accommodation and provide a route to safety for Ukrainians, and their immediate family members.
- Birmingham City Council and the voluntary and community sector work together to ensure the necessary preparations are in place, and sanctuary is provided to Ukrainian people and families arriving in the city.

Zaporizhzhia Delegation visits Birmingham: Birmingham welcomed a delegation from Zaporizhzhia to mark over 50 years of partnership and highlight the city’s ongoing support for Ukranian residents. The visit showcased community-led initiatives and the strength of international solidarity during times of crisis.
